We require a logo design for a new company based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Weta Coffee is the arresting product of a new Auckland boutique roastery. A newcomer to the coffee market it stands proud of its aromatic and robust flavours awakening latent senses with each taste.

Auckland, New Zealand with a population of 1.4 million is often termed the “City of Sails” because of the great number of yachts that sail in the harbours and adjoining Hauraki Gulf. It lies between two harbours, the Manukau and the Waitemata and is surrounded by 11 dormant volcanoes and numerous picturesque islands. The Waitakere Ranges to the west of the city forms a gateway to magnificent west coast surf beaches and an abundance of bush walks. The largest city in New Zealand, Auckland is beautiful, vibrant and fast-paced.

We have adopted ‘Weta’ as our brand – the indigenous Maori word ‘Weta’ describes a New Zealand endemic insect species found in a variety of environments including alpine, forests, grasslands, caves, shrub bush and urban gardens. The physical appearance is almost prehistoric with large strong spiny hind legs and resembles a large horned grasshopper.

We are keen to incorporate a weta image into our brand logo and see the logo being used on takeout coffee cups, signage, t-shirts, aprons, etc. We also see the colour psychology benefits in possibly using a variation of orange in our branding, such as terracotta or burnt orange, though this is not essential and we are open to design ideas.

Coffee roasts/blends may take on the name of associated weta habitats/associations, e.g. ‘bush blend’, though these have not at this stage been finalised.

Our target market is the devoted coffee lovers that abound in this city – initially Auckland then expanding nationwide. The branding should stand out, be tasteful, classy and modern.

Please be aware that Weta Workshops and Weta Digital, home of Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings own trademarks for their logo and name, and therefore we need to ensure that we do not breach these existing trademarks, especially in the form of the logo.
