Dear designers,
Instagram fans around the world (and the media) were split into two camps on Wednesday, when the eponymous photo sharing app unveiled a new logo. The new logo is a striking departure from the original and has evoked passionate debate in the international design community.
The new logo was designed in-house by the Instagram design team. Did they get it right? What would you create instead, if given the chance? We want to see your designs!
The brief: Design a new logo for Instagram.
1 - Make it fun and social, so users can enjoy the social aspect of Instagram and recognise the identity. Your logo needs to represent the diversity, life, and color of the Instagram community.
2 - Make it personal - Logo needs to connect and touch users
3 - Keep it fresh - The icon should stand out among the other icons on users phone and to make users want to keep coming back for more.
4 - Color palette: We'll leave this up to you to decide. We've observed that the way color has been applied is central to the controversy surrounding the new logo. They've chosen a bright rainbow palette, but you can choose to be as bold as you wish.
Your new design should convey Instagram as bright, smart, innovative, simple.
Presentation / Dimensions:
- Your new logo should be accompanied by the Instagram wordmark (attached) on a transparent background
- Dimensions: 512 x 512 px
Keep in mind that Instagram's design reflects a brand identity framework for its existing family of apps and enables different icons for new products over time.
