Illustration-Design Kurzbeschreibung

Please refer to the attached file and create the graphic as described here. The attached file shows a rough outline of the graphic, with two panes depicting the trolley problem (a moral dilemma) each with a different perspective. The image will be used for a psychological study. The goal here is to create a sense of spatial depth and distance.

The trolley problem has a runaway train (or trolley) that is speeding down a track toward five people that are tied to its tracks. There is also a footbridge with a large man standing on a trapdoor over the tracks. The only way you can save the five people who are tied to the tracks is to pull a lever that opens the trapdoor such that the large man falls in front of the train and stops it before it can kill the five people. Unfortunately, the large man will die in the process. One must decide whether or not to sacrifice the one person to save five others.

Pane1: As in the attached outline, the above pane must show the train on its tracks far in the distance with the man on the footbridge standing on a trapdoor, also in the distance. Using depth cues, such as trees and a widening track, the five people must be shown to be very close, and much larger. The lever will also be in the foreground, suggesting that the decision maker is the person looking at the image, and that the decision maker is close to the five people. Overall, the first pane must give the impression that the man to be sacrificed is distant whereas the five to be saved are very close.

Pane2: The second, or lower, pane will be--kind of--the reverse, where the train and the man on the bridge are in the foreground, and the five people tied to the tracks are way off in the distance. Again, the trapdoor lever must be in the foreground, planted on the ground, near to the man on the bridge, but such that it feels within reach to the viewer. The second pane must give the impression that the man to be sacrificed is very close whereas the five to be saved are distant.

The style must give a sense of realism, avoid being too cartoony and too unrealistic, because we want viewers to feel at least a little connected to the people in the foreground of each pane. At the same time, it needn't be so detailed that facial expressions become places where important decisions need to be made. While all the people's faces should be facing the viewer, those in the distance should be too far to make out facial expressions, and those close up need not be too detailed. However, when close up,the people tied to the tracks should er on the side of looking worried rather than happy, and the large man should be neutral.

Other than depicting the key objects, namely train, the tracks, the bridge and the people, the background can be as plain as the artist desires. Other than depth cues, nothing is else is necessary, although some terrain and sky is not prohibited. Caution must be made not to create distractions from the key objects.

The image should have closer to a horizon or eye-level perspective rather than a high eye level perspective, so that the viewer is more likely to feel like they are at the scene rather than that they are a God-like figure watching from above.

Please draw a lightweight train or trolley that could more realistically be brought to a stop by the large man rather than a huge locomotive.
