Illustration with 4 different images. The first shows steel metal substrate, the second shows the metal substrate coated with polymer (epoxy) layer, the third shows the metal substrate coated with epoxy layer containing graphene sheets, the fourth image shows the metal substrate coated with epoxy layer containing graphene sheets where the graphene sheets are attached to the epoxy chains. The epoxy polymer chains are connected to each other in network structure fashion. the graphene sheets can be described by a rectangular or diamond shape. A zoom in each layer to show the detail structure. The metal substrate and the coating can be of similar thickness. this demonstration will be used as graphical abstract in a scientific article that demonstrate the different coating type can prevent the permeation of water and oxygen molecules to the surface of the metal substrate and protect it from corrosion. These five images will be replicate to show the effect of sea water corrosion on the substrate, where the uncoated substrate shows significant pitting, the epoxy coated substrate show less pitting, the epoxy-graphene coating show even far less change in the metal substrate surface, and the epoxy-graphene coating where the epoxy chains are linked to the surface of graphene shows no visible change in the substrate surface.
