Civil Society Awards recognizes individuals who are addressing some of America’s most difficult social problems through social entrepreneurship. History has shown that free markets are the best way to organize economic activity. Here at the Manahattan Institute, we understand that in a healthy society, markets are complemented by charitable and philanthropic enterprises–which both help those in need and prepare citizens to realize their potential. Adam Smith understood this: his writing on the virtues of markets was preceded by his writing on morality, compassion, and altruism (Theory of Moral Sentiments). Since its founding, the United States has been characterized by its vibrant civil society, one in which private, nonprofit, voluntary nongovernmental organizations are formed to ameliorate social ills. The Civil Society is sometimes referred to as the Third Sector. It stands for community, the spirit of association, and getting to the root of a problem.
I envision our logo having a few references. From an organic seedling, to different pathways that we all take to form a community. The logo should be uplifting and inspired by people coming together to do more than charity. A true civil society is when ordinary citizens come together to advance the common welfare.
In our logo, I’d love to see a reference to that of Alexis De Tocqueville, a French diplomat, political scientist and historian. He was best known for his works Democracy in America. He was a pioneer in that he analyzed the improved living standards and social conditions of individuals as well as their relationship to the market and state in Western societies.
