Logo-Design Kurzbeschreibung

We need a logo design for a new environmentally sustainable farm called Little Portion Farm, located in Maryland, USA. This is a project of the Franciscan Friars Conventual, a Catholic order of priests and brothers. All food from the farm will be donated to those in need. The farm will be designed using permaculture principles, such that it will function as a diverse ecosystem with a variety of habitats and plants (trees, pond, wildflowers, vines, perennial plants, annual vegetables, etc). Since the land was previously farmed using heavy-chemical application, another goal of this project is to restore the ecological health of the soil and to regenerate its life-giving potential (tangibly and intangibly). In this way, the farm is the Friars’ response to “hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,” as Pope Francis expressed in his letter Laudato Si’. The farm is also meant to serve as a place of gathering, service, reflection, and education for the local community, cultivating a deeper appreciation of the beauty of the natural world and its interconnectedness, and realizing the Catholic call to serve the most vulnerable and protect creation.

The patron saint of the farm is Bl. Giles of Assisi (seen in the attached image), who guides the mission of the farm by his words: “Those who lovingly work their small expanse of fields, reap enough for themselves and others.”

The name of the farm - “Little Portion” - comes from the name of the little chapel built by St. Francis in the 13th century in Assisi, Italy. This chapel can be seen in the logo attached. The name also conveys the idea that it is a small portion of the earth, as reflected in the above quote.

There are several other images attached associated with the Franciscan Order, for additional inspiration if needed. All of these images may or may not be included in the logo design, but are used to illustrate some of the inspirations behind the farm.

A good logo will be simple, yet convey the Franciscan identity, while also illustrating the role of the farm in caring for the earth and the poor.
