The size of the book is in the brief: 9" x 6". The final size of the spine will not be known until the new edition is complete, but is expected to be in the range 10-13mm

It will be helpful if back cover designs include editable placeholder text for the book and author.

No, the new design does not need to follow the design of the original edition. That design was done by Amazon and after charging for it, they would not transfer the copyright to me. That is partly why the design brief prohibits the use of stock images - they can be used in other design projects and that can put the book branding at risk

Many thanks for all the wonderful design ideas that have been submitted. Choosing a winning design is very difficult because design is such a personal thing. That's why I have a Design Review Panel, which has almost completed its work. A final decision will be taken in the next 24 hours or so. From the Design Review Panel voting so far, there are two, very different, designs that are the front runners but very close. I have also added the back covertext as a file attached to the project brief.

Once agin, thank you all for the design ideas. I really appreciate the thought and work that has gone into these knowing that only one person can win. I am considering the possibility of using Design Crowd'a facility to pick a 2nd or 3rd design.

The winning design will be selected shortly. It is difficult as the Design Review Panel have two particular designs extremely close together out in front. One of the two designers has made all the suggested changes; the other has not. That makes selection easier.

Keep up the good work. There are possibly two more book cover design projects later in the year.
