I'd like to clarify a few things here for the designers as this contest continues: 1. I want your CREATIVITY. Spend a moment thinking about a unique place to take this logo. If your logo looks like something I or anyone else could put together, I don't want it. Think outside the box. Approach it from an abstract place. Give me something fun and exciting and creative to work with. You are likely very talented, please use your creativity on this project. I want to look at your design and say: UNIQUE and BEAUTIFUL 2. I was VERY clear about wanting the "WGAN" and "with Matt Gagnon" elements to be smaller and more complementary to the logo, with "Morning News" being the main featured aspect of the text. Please do not submit logos that ignore this request, they will be immediately discounted. 3. Many of the logos that were presented to me were, to be blunt, pretty slapped together and incredibly generic. I want you to *be creative* with your design. Do not just write out "WGAN Morning News" in a block of text, and then submit it to me. I want there to be some kind of graphical element to go with it. And while I am willing to look at and accept the use of things like microphones or headsets, please also understand that those types of designs will make this logo look like *every other radio show logo ever made* so I would love to see some other options. Think of voice, audio, sound, etc. And While a text-heavy logo with the name of the station, show and host is probably where we end up, I'd really like some of you to experiment and (once again) think outside the box a little bit. I'd love to see someone make an abstract logo image to associate with the show, for instance. 4. As I mentioned, the show is politically conservative, so if you are going to try to incorporate elements into the logo, a great thing to think about would be symbols or things that are associated with either political conservatism or libertarianism. However, with that said, much like the use of microphones for radio logos, the use of things like a torch, or the statue of liberty is incredibly overdone. Please don't use the Statue of Liberty, but I am willing to consider a torch, though honestly I'd love for you to think less conventionally than that. 5. The other important thing about this project is that it is headquartered in Portland, Maine. Thus, a Maine (or Portland) based logo could also work for you. Here again, though, there are major cliches that you should be wary of. Using the silhouette of the state of Maine is also way overdone up here, so if you use it, you need to use it in a "non-generic" way (i.e. don't just slap it in the background of the logo with the text over it). One idea that is also overused, but still has some potential to work is the lighthouse idea. I don't want all of you do send me lighthouse logos -- and in fact I will reward your creativity going in other directions if you use your own mind to build something unique -- but if you do, I think it does have the ability to maybe work, both as a symbol for Maine, and as a symbol for freedom. If you do use a lighthouse type of idea, though, please base the design off of Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. That is the closest lighthouse to our broadcast area and is the most iconic in the state. Other ideas (lobsters, for instance) are somewhat welcome, though I beg you to not make it goofy or cartoony, and I do warn you in advance that I'm not in love with using an animal as a logo, so it would have to be damn good. 6. Colors are blue and gold (navy and a more yellowish gold that isn't dull), but as I've said a number of times I also want to reward independent thinking, so if you want to try something outside those colors, I will not penalize you for doing so and would even encourage it if your design sensibilities bring you there. 7. Back to point one, please be CREATIVE. Try something new. Try something bold. Try something abstract. Try something unusual. Try something special. Don't just give me a block of text with a couple of stars on it and think you have a shot.
