We require an iconic silhouette style logo depicting a man playing steel pan. This logo/brand will be incorporated into a 5 page website for the Pan Innovation Project.
Hello and welcome! I am Michael Olivier, aka "Bubbles", the composer of the iconic "Heaven & Hell Is On Earth", which featured on the 20th Century Steel Band " Warm Heart , Cold Steel" album, released in 1975 after winning The ITV talent show, https://newfacesatv.info/2019/08/19/1-february-1975-series-three-20-viewers-winners-final-1/ |The record and the lyrics have been sampled by some of the most influential Hip Hop artists over the last 35 years . (please refer to attachment which lists all tracks. Although they are listed they are not in release date order, can you please list them in the order of the year of the release) As well as manufacturing, tuning, arranging and composing, Michael was on the founder, arranger and composer behind the iconic 20th Century Steel Band. Michael is most famous for “Heaven & Hell is On Earth” which happens to be one of the most sampled tracks in the history of the Hip-Hop Movement:
“Children Growing, Women Produce, Men Go Work & Some Go Stealing,”
“Everyone’s Got To Make A Living,”
“Heaven & Hell Is On Earth”
Owing to the fact that my words would have inspired so many record labels to take the phrase "Some Go Stealing" literally, I have decided to make a website to rightfully claim my moral rights in all works that were inspired by original work and set the record straight with regards to the anthology and in respect of my contribution to Steel Pan, Hip-Hop and The Notting Hill Carnival

The steel pan evolved out of earlier musical practices of Trinidad’s African descendants.
Drumming was used as a form of communication among the enslaved Africans and was subsequently outlawed by the British colonial government in 1883.
While many instruments have experienced some degree of evolution in recent years, the steel pan has the distinction of being the only instrument to be truly ‘invented’ in the 20th century.
The first instruments developed in the evolution of steel pan were Tamboo Bamboo, tunable sticks made of bamboo wood. These were hit onto the ground with other sticks in order to produce sound. Tamboo Bamboo bands also included percussion using biscuit tins, oil drums, and bottle-and-spoon.
By the mid-1930s metal percussion was being used in the Tamboo Bamboo bands, the first probably being either the automobile brake hub ‘iron’ or the biscuit drum ‘boom’. The former replaced the bottle-and-spoon, and then later the ‘bass’ bamboo that was pounded on the ground.
By the late 1930s the occasional all-steel bands were seen at Carnival and by 1940 it had become the preferred Carnival accompaniment of young underprivileged men. The 55-gallon oil drum was used to make lead steel pans from around 1947.
The Steel Pan instrument first appeared on British TV in 1950, when Trinidadian Boscoe Holder and his Caribbean Dancers performed with a steel band on his own television show, Bal Creole, broadcast in June 1950 on BBC Television.
With the exposure of the instrument so widely broadcast the previous year, The Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) were invited to play in the summer of 1951 on the Southbank in London as part of the ‘Festival of Britain’.
This was the first time the British public came into direct contact with the instrument. It was hard to comprehend how a 55 gallon oil drum could make musical sound let alone be used to play melodies of songs and the public literally looked under the steel pans to check the sound was actually coming from the instrument.
The Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO), formed to attend the Festival of Britain in June 1951, was the first steel band whose instruments were all recycled from oil drums, and the first time steel pan music was heard in Britain. The festival, held to mark the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851, took place at the newly built South Bank Centre in London.
The members of TASPO consisted of the twelve best pan musicians selected from 70 Trinidad steel bands at the time including Ellie Mannette from Invaders, Sterling Betancourt from Crossfire, Philmore ‘Boots’ Davidson from Syncopators, Belgrave Bonaparte from Southern Symphony, Andrew ‘Pan’ De Labastide from Hill 60, Theo Stephens from Free French, Anthony Williams from North Stars, Dudley Smith from Rising Sun, Orman ‘Patsy’ Haynes from Casablanca, Winston ‘Spree’ Simon from Tokyo and Sonny Roach from Sun Valley who replaced Granville Sealey from Tripoli.
The musical director and conductor was Lieutenant Joseph Griffith from Barbados, a member of the Trinidad Police Band and director of music for the government of St Lucia. TASPO toured London, Manchester and Leeds followed by a performance in Paris before returning to Trinidad. In the years to follow most became pioneers for the steel pan instrument and it’s music.
in 1992 the steel pan became the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago acknowledging the progress made at home and abroad. The steel band is now much more than just entertainment for a Caribbean themed party. It is an orchestra of hundreds playing any style of music from traditional classical to dynamic and original compositions, it is also an experimental ensemble working with other instruments to create new work.
An award winning documentary film Classical Steel, features the steel orchestra in the role of symphony orchestra.
Amid the electronica of 20th Century music one new instrument stands out for its simplicity. The steel pan, possibly the only instrument made out of industrial waste, has become an icon of Trinidadian culture.
Hammered into the shiny metal surface is a series of dents. Each one creates a different note, subtly different from the ones around it, according to their position and size.
The steel pan, often referred to incorrectly as a steel drum, emerged in the 1930s. Metal objects including car parts, paint pots, dustbins, oil drums and biscuit tins, were originally used as percussion instruments, but at some point they began to be tuned.
"It was a slow process, everyone got together and invented the steel pan by using pots and pans and testing them out," says Sterling Betancourt, a Trinidadian panman who now lives in London.
"The sound and the notes came, but it wasn't like we thought about it."
Betancourt, 82, grew up in Laventille, a poor suburb just outside Port of Spain, said by many to be the birthplace of the steel pan.
"It was exciting, we knew we had something but we were just playing, it took time," he says.
The history of Trinidadian street music goes back centuries.
When French planters arrived in Trinidad in the late 1700s they brought with them a carnival tradition - and their slaves formed their own festival, fuelled by drum music.
After emancipation in 1834 the celebrations became noisier and more colourful, though after disturbances in 1881 the British government tried to ban the performers' sticks and drums.
What followed was the tamboo-bamboo - bamboo sticks cut for striking together and hammering against the ground.
But in 1934 the tamboo-bamboo was banned too.
This is when the steel pan came into its own.
"It really came from the bowels of our impoverished lower classes and we are extremely proud of that," says Michelle Huggins-Watts, a Trinidadian steel pan arranger.
"It helped bring the players recognition, it allowed them to travel and see the world, it brought opportunities they would never have had if they had not been involved in this art form."
Huggins-Watts is a rare thing. She is the only woman arranger to win the island's prestigious Panorama competition with her band, Valley Harps.
"It wasn't until the late 1970s or 80s that women even started playing the steel pan. It was a street instrument, it took a while to become respectable," she adds.
The pans used by the Valley Harps are made from old chemical containers now, they are more readily available than oil drums.
"They have to be very carefully cleaned so they are safe," she adds.
"Some pans are made from scratch, brand new, but that's a very new thing."
By 1951, Trinidad's new steel bands put forward their best players, including Betancourt, to join the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra for the Festival of Britain.
"We went over with our rusty pans. They weren't painted or chromed or anything - just dustbins," Betancourt says. "People didn't know what to expect, but they liked it. They said it was 'black magic'."
The music has been keenly adopted by the pop world. The Hollies used the sound of the steel pan in their song Carrie Anne, Prince used it in his song New Position, and 70s jazz-fusion band Spyro Gyra incorporated the sound of steel in Morning Dance.
"There is something about the steel pan and Caribbean music in general that resonates with the rest of the world," says Prof Tim Wall, a lecturer in radio and pop music studies at Birmingham City University.
"It's familiar, they play songs that we know, but it's also very exotic, and we like that."
It also sounds like holidays, and sunshine, which may explain some of its appeal.
"It can sometimes have a cruise ship mentality, people think of it as a happy summery sound from Trinidad and the Caribbean islands as a whole, but it is a lot more than that. It's got a very important history," adds Wall.
"Music builds community and acts as a form of communication. Looking back centuries ago, slaves had been stripped of their cultural identity, their names, their music, so they created new music using things they found lying around. That created that rich history of percussion music."
Oppressed people have always found ways to make music, in spite of discriminatory laws meant to stop them from doing just that.
In Cuba, for example, enslaved Africans who didn’t have access to building materials would stretch hides over barrels to create drums that would later become today’s congas. In Brazil, people built small agogo bells based on the design of larger gankoguis in the West African Ewe tribe.
In Trinidad, a country subject to centuries of British imperialism, this sort of ingenuity and creativity led to the creation of an instrument that you probably know pretty well: the steel pan. You might’ve heard it in Childish Gambino’s “Summertime Magic,” The Beach Boy’s “Kokomo,” or even in Soulja Boy’s breakout hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” – but there’s a lot more to the instrument than its popularity in American pop music.
In Trinidad, colonizers passed many laws in attempts to suppress enslaved and indigenous people, many of which were restrictions on Carnival, a festival that they deemed offensive and sinful. One of these laws, passed in 1877, forbade the playing of drums in the celebratory music of the festival. This wasn’t as effective as colonizers hoped, and it wasn’t long before Trinidadians started bringing bamboo sticks, colloquially known as tamboo-bamboo, to Carnival and stomping the ground with them instead. These bamboo sticks were tuned through shortening and dampening to play a variety of notes, so that each performer could handle a different register and an array of percussion could come together in harmony. These performers called themselves tamboo-bamboo bands, and you can see an example of what their music was like here.
The tamboo bamboo bands evolved over time, and by the 1930s, many of their bamboo instruments were gradually replaced with scrap metal, utensils, and household objects. It began with bottle players, who struck gin bottles with spoons, but it quickly expanded to accommodate all sorts of sound sources and timbres. Through constant experimentation, musicians realized things about the quality of metallic percussion and how to play it – raised surfaces resonate differently than flat ones, thin metals sometimes sustain longer than thick ones, etc.
Winston “Spree” Simon (1930 – 1976)
With these realizations, it wasn’t long before Winston “Spree” Simon built the first steel pan that could accommodate an entire melody on its own. By hammering a piece of metal until eight distinct pitches could be played, he could now play melodies and basic harmonies all on his own. His ideas eventually helped him found TASPO (the Trinidad All-Steel Percussion Orchestra), in which every performer played one of these steel pans together in harmony. But, as important as Simon’s innovations were, chalking the steel pan up to a single person’s creativity would be a disservice to the countless Trinidadian musicians who helped pioneer the instrument. So, let’s talk about some other innovators and inventors who impacted the instrument’s path.
Ellie Manette (1927 – 2018)
Ellie Manette was the first to ever wrap his sticks in rubber, softening the transients of each note and creating an overall smoother sound. He was also the first to bend his instrument into a concave shape, which made room for more notes. Nowadays, it’s hard to find a steel pan player who doesn’t play both a concave steel pan and with softened mallets. Although he passed away in 2018, his legacy lives on through Mannette Musical Instruments, which sells all sorts of steel pans with different tunings and ranges. Some even call Ellie the father of the modern steel pan – but the instrument’s history doesn’t end with him.
Anthony Williams (1931 – present)
Anthony Williams, a former member of TASPO, was the first to look at the surplus of empty 55-gallon oil drums on the island of Trinidad and try his hand at building a steel pan out of one; thanks to him, recycling oil drums is now a standard practice in the creation of steel pans. This is what caused the name ‘steel drum’ to be used alongside its original title of ‘steel pan,’ even though ‘steel drum’ technically refers to the material they’re built out of. Williams was also the first to create what’s called the ‘spider web pan,’ named for the web-like pattern on its surface, which is tuned in fourths and fifths rather than smaller intervals. It’s easier to tune, and more harmonically sound than some previous versions. Now, almost all steel pans in the tenor range use this tuning.
Bertie Marshall (1936 – 2012)
Bertie Marshall was the first to invent the ‘double pan,’ two separately tuned tenor pans to be played by one person. This increased the amount of notes one could play, and allowed for far more interesting melody and harmony from a single performer. It’s very likely you’ve heard one of these; if you want an example, just listen to “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid. He was also the first to recognize the damage that prolonged exposure to sunlight had on the instruments, and helped make the practice of performing under canopies more widespread. He didn’t stop there, though; eventually, he even started playing with electronics and amplification. In 1971, he created the Bertphone amplifier, which could adjust the tone and volume of each individual note through a mixer to perfect the sound of an amplified pan.
Dive deeper into the steel plan
All in all, this is just an overview at the expansive history of the steel pan. If you want to learn more about the instrument, you can listen to history told directly from Ellie Mannette himself, or from legendary steel pan performer Neville Jules, who has devoted his life to the culture surrounding the steel pan. He has been playing with steel pan orchestras since they were tamboo-bamboo bands, and he founded Trinidad All Stars, one of the most popular steel pan orchestras out there.
If the history of the steel pan inspires you, we’ve compiled some of Splice’s best steel pan samples into a succinct pack for you to use. Check it out here if you want to try your hand at using the versatile instrument in your own productions. Or, if you can get your hands on an empty 55-gallon oil drum, a hammer, and a torch, you could even take a shot at trying to build one yourself.
Steel drums, also known as pans, are the only family of chromatic, acoustic instruments invented in the twentieth century. They hail from Trinidad, and their fascinating history is inextricably linked to the culture and resiliency of the Trinidadian people.
At one time or another, Spanish, English, Dutch and French colonialists ruled the island of Trinidad. African slaves were brought to Trinidad in 1783 to work on the sugar plantations. Celebrations such as Carnival and Canboulay, (the burning of the sugar cane fields) were very popular on the island, and as the slave population grew African drumming became an important part of these street festivals. When slavery was abolished in 1838, laborers were imported from other continents, including many from East India. With this new influx of people and culture came the festivals of Hosein and Ramdilla, both of which incorporated lots of rhythm and drumming.
Street festivals began to get rowdy and rough during the 1860s and 1870s. Drums were banned by the ruling class in the 1880s out of fear that they were being used to communicate secret messages. More melodic instruments were introduced to the parades and celebrations by the colonialists, to replace the drumming. As a protest, the Tamboo Bamboo movement evolved — cutting lengths of bamboo and stomping them on the ground. Four distinct instruments — the boom, chandler, fuller and cutter were created by the lower classes as a revolt against the people in power. This art form remained a nucleus of musical and political expression throughout the 1930s.
Suppression and hardship were reflected in the Tamboo Bamboo movement, and eventually an element of violence rose to the surface. Tamboo Bamboo bands were outlawed because rival bands were fighting one another with the bamboo. At the same time, the need for artistic expression through rhythm continued. Gangs started picking up metal dust bins, biscuit tins, garbage lids and beating on them, mixing the sounds of bamboo and metal. Metal eventually replaced bamboo and the idea of pan was born.
During WWI Carnival was suspended in Trinidad and Tobago but the sounds of pan continued to be developed. As metal surfaces were hit repeatedly, musicians realized the pitch changed. By 1948, 55- gallon oil drums were readily available from the oil refineries on the island. People such as Ellie Mannette, Winston “Spree” Simon, and Tony Williams are credited as pioneers of the steel drum, creating the 12 notes of the chromatic scale on a single pan. When Carnival celebrations resumed in Trinidad after World War II, the steel pan became an important part of the street festival.
The steel drums have continued to evolve to this day. They are now the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, having ascended from the most depressed areas of society to glamorous concert halls around the world. They truly are the voice of a diverse, multi-cultural people.
Interesting Steel Pan Facts:
Musicians who play the steel pan are referred to as pannists.
The early metal pan musicians used a variety of tools to create the sound of metal music - including kitchen utensils and metal containers.
When making a steel pan the bottom of the oil drum is pounded into the shape of a bowl. Further shaping and tuning is done with hammers that create surfaces that resonate to make distinct sounds.
Originally steel pan instruments were played in steel bands with instruments such as dustbins, biscuit tins, and soap boxes. Today steel bands include a variety of other instruments such as triangles, bongos, congas, vibraphones, other percussion instruments, and cow bells.
The most popular and well-known music played with the steel pan is Calypso music.
Early in the history of the steel pan in Trinidad steel bands competed with each other. Those who were members of steel bands were thought to be gangs members and street fighting was common. This resulted in steel bands being looked down upon.
In 1992 the steel pan became the official national instrument in Trinidad and Tobago.
Steel Pan Band?
There’s no better music that evokes sunshine than the intriguing and unique sound of a steel pan band.
Many clients contact Solid Steel to enquire if we are available to play for their events. They often ask ‘is your steel pan band available to play at my wedding?’
But have you ever stopped to think about just where the musical style of this so-called ‘steel pan band’ originated?
Steel pans also known as ‘steel drums’ or just ‘pans’, when collectively played with multiple musicians sound amazing. But this musical group is called ‘steel band’ and not ‘steel pan band’ because this musical instrument originated from Trinidad and Tobago and that’s what it is called there.
A folk instrument like the steel pan is clearly worthy of international respect. Using the terms that are used by the home country where the instrument was invented and developed seems to us to be the minimum requirement the people of Trinidad and Tobago should expect. The pan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, after all!
Steel band history
Back in the 1800s, when Trinidad was a sugar plantation society, slaves were brought to the region by colonists from Central and West Africa. They worked on the plantations and brought their music with them. Drumming and singing were commonplace and were a big feature in all religious ceremonies and other celebrations, as well as a method of communication.
But eventually the colonists became concerned that the drumming was being used as a way of organising riots and uprisings. As a result, all drum parades were banned towards the end of the century. After this, bamboo sticks were used to beat out rhythms, with groups of musicians later known as tamboo bamboo bands. But then these too were banned in the 1930s because rival bands would often clash and fight in the streets.
The first steel drum was invented in Trinidad at about the time of the second world war. The tamboo bamboo bands had also voluntarily made the move to steel because metal was stronger and louder than bamboo, with the first versions of the steel drum being paint and biscuit tins!
After beating what were just junk metal containers, it was soon discovered that dents and bulges of various sizes in the tins could make sounds of different pitches. Musicians started to tune them up so that melodies could be played and the first bands of steel pans were then born!
Steel pans made from steel drums
The modern pan is a chromatically pitched percussion instrument made from 55 gallon industrial drums that formerly contained chemicals.
The term ‘drum’ refers to the steel drum containers from which the pans are made. The steel drum is more correctly called a ‘steel pan’ orjust ‘pan’ as it falls into the idiophone family of instruments, and so is not a musical drum which is a membranophone.
The pan is struck using a pair of straight sticks tipped with rubber; the size and type of rubber tip varies according to the range of notes being played on any particular pan. Some steel band musicians use more than 2 pan sticks, sometimes 3 and even 4 to simultaneously play more notes for more complex harmonising.
Steel pans are built using sheet metal with a thickness between 0.8 and 1.5 mm (1⁄32 and 1⁄16 in). Historically, steel pans have been built from used 55-gallon oil barrels or drums. Nowadays, many instrument makers do not rely on used steel containers and get the resonance bodies manufactured according to their preferences and technical specifications.
Steel pan manufacture
In a first step, the sheet metal is stretched into a bowl shape (this is commonly known as ‘sinking’). This process is usually done with hammers, manually or with the help of air pressure. Secondly, the note pattern is then marked onto the surface, and the notes of different sizes are shaped and molded into the surface. After the tempering the notes have to be softened and tuned for the initial tuning. The pan maker will then use the best possible tuning device to get the right pitch for each of the playing areas allied to the note that is wanted. Often they will use an electronic tuner called a strobe tuner to assist the tuning process.
The size of each note corresponds to the pitch—the larger the surface area, the lower the tone.
The size of the instrument varies from one pan to another. It may have almost all of the “skirt” (the cylindrical part of the oil drum) cut off and around 30 soprano-range notes. It may use the entire drum with only three bass notes per pan, in which case one person may play six such pans. The length of the skirt generally corresponds to the tessitura (high or low range) of the drum. The pans are usually either painted or chrome plated. Other processes such as nickel plating, powdercoating, or hardening can also be applied as a finish.
Steel band musicians
A pan player is sometimes called a ‘pannist’ or ‘panist’ in modern day Trinidadian society, but these recent terms are very much efforts to lend respectability to the instrument. They sound way too ‘scientific’ and far too similar to the term ‘pianist’. Outside of the world of classical music those who play piano prefer to be called ‘piano players’ sooner than ‘pianists’. To call oneself a ‘pianist’ sounds pretentious and deeply ‘uncool’, so by that measure most players who actually play pan for a living- like those in Solid Steel- would prefer to be called ‘pan players’. Furthermore, older terms that were used in Trinidad like ‘panman and ‘panwoman’ do not belong in a gender-inclusive modern world!
Influential pan players in the early history of this instrument include Ellie Mannette, the “Father of the Modern Steel Drum” and an accomplished musician, and Winston ‘Spree’ Simon, the inventor and a skilled player of the “Ping Pong” pan. He’s the man widely credited with playing the first recognisable tune on a steel pan and you can read more about him on the TriniSoca website.
Steel band competitions
Pan players in Trinidad and Tobago generally do all their practicing and playing with their steel bands in preparation for performance in competitions, the largest and most famous one being ‘Panorama’ which takes place annually pre-Carnival. Most players generally memorize the musical parts that they practice in preparation for that performance with no reading of charts involved. Those pan players that have more musical knowledge are likely to have more senior positions within the band.
The most important figure in a steel band competing at a Panorama is that of the arranger. It is his musical ideas that need to be communicated to the band and the majoryiy of points awarded to the band are based on judgemnts of the quality of the arrangement of a Panorama tune.
Amongst the pan players themselves, the top position in a Panorama steelband is that of the captain, but these large ensembles often also include section leaders who are accomplished pan players that monitor the tonal sections in the band.
Since the first steel pans and steel bands emerged the popularity of this music has grown. Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, and many other non-Caribbean countries have steel bands featuring steel pan musicians.
The first 'melody pan' that could sound an entire melody was created by Winston 'Spree' Simon.
The first steel pan musician to wrap the sticks with rubber to soften the sound was Ellie Mannette. He also created the concave shape that still remains in the design today.
One of the first steel pan musicians to use a 55 gallon oil drum for creating the steel pan was Anthony Williams. He also invented the 'spider web pan' which is the popular choice for tenor pans.
The inventor of the double tenor pam was Bertie Marshall. He also recognized that the sun had negative effects on the steel pan and started using canopies for protection during outdoor play.
Steel pans only have about a one and half range octave which is not very much when compared to other instruments.
Bass steel pans are very large and difficult to move from place to place.
The World Steel Band Music Festival is held in Trinidad since 1964.
The largest competition for steel bands is held during Carnival in Trinidad - called Panorama.

1953 was referred to as the year of Steel band music; over twenty bands (nineteen male and one female) were formed. Anthony Williams creates the “SPIDER-WEB” ping pong, referred to as the “fourths and fifths” pan..
Anthony Williams - Spider-Web
Anthony Williams (right) introduced the “spider web” lead Pan. The instrument shown off here by Williams and Herman “Rock” Johnson was an amended version which Johnson claims to have crafted and whose expanded range supposedly was the key to the Williams-led North Stars band winning Trinidad’s 1962 Music Festival with their memorable rendition of the Strauss Waltz, Voices of Spring. - See more

Arden Williams, a student from Trinidad carried his ping pong with him when he attended the University of the West Indies, Mona campus (then the University College of the West Indies). Soon after, he and other Trinidadian students and one Jamaican started the first-ever steelband on Jamaican soil.
1955
In 1955, costumed steel band tramps accentuated the Coronation Day celebrations. According to one report, shortly after midday, the best- dressed steel band - the Quo Vadis marched as units of the Royal Navy and with a following of over one thousand took to the streets of Georgetown. Striped 'Admirals' in navy blue led the bandsmen who were clad in white. The Chicago Steel Band resplendent with the Union Jack stopped at Government house in Carmichael Street and played a perfect rendition of 'Rule Britannica' and 'God save the Queen' for Lady Savage," the wife of Governor Alfred Savage. At Camp Street the Texans and Tripoli, each with a following of over two thousand, clashed. However, unlike in previous years, they did not stop, but continued to play their music with the hope of attracting supporters from the other side. -- Lloyd Kandasammy

Lord Woodbine (seated at left): The forgotten sixth Beatle
Harold Adolphus Philips (15 January 1929 – 5 July 2000), known as Lord Woodbine, was a Trinidadian calypsonian and music promoter. He is regarded by some as the musical mentor of The Beatles, and has been called the "sixth Beatle". He played a tenor pan as part of the first professional steel band in England, the All Caribbean Steel Band, which was formed by Gerry Gobin in 1955, and played regularly at the Joker's Club and then the Jacaranda Club in Liverpool, owned by Allan Williams. Philips later played with the All Caribbean Steel Band in their television appearance on the Opportunity Knocks in July 1965. read more on Lord Woodbine

The first steelband from Trinidad to reach Montreal was Dixie Stars in 1955 as the Esso Steel band, sponsored by Imperial Oil. From there they made a tour across Canada, ending up in Vancouver. They(not all) returned by boat. On reaching Aruba, some took a plane back to Trinidad. Others , including my brother, stayed on board the ship until it reached England. Except for a small side from the band that Rudy Commissiong had taken to Bermuda the year before, that was the end of the band. See more

The 1960 Guyana Festival, October, 1960 organized by the Jaycees marked the first attempt, to bring Steelband Mas' to a carnival-like celebration. This was the dream of Charlie Hubbard, GM of the Mariner's club, and all those unheralded heroes, who promoted steel band and mas' in the fifties. Every mother's son turned out for the weekend festival at the BGCC grounds, Annexe. Vivian Lee's Vaudeville Variety Show with dancers in colourful exotic costumes popped out of a huge birthday cake to mark the occasion. The Pantomime presentation of the Royal Bank of Canada's Grimm's Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes won Costume Band of the year, with Pemya's Marabuntas King Richard runner up. The results, unacceptable to the pan beaters, resulted in minor unrest the same night, and thereafter, all decisions in this fiercely competitive event would be issued two days later in the press, as is done in Trinidad.

The CARIRI Project
In 1972, the first scientific study of the characteristics of pan was initiated at the University of the West Indies (UWI) at St. Augustine, Trinidad, by Ron Dennis, a lecturer in the Engineering Department. Dennis, who was from England, analyzed the behavior of pan notes in the laboratory and theorized that pans could be pressed (made concave) by the hydroform method. Initially, a small die was manufactured and tested on mini-pans, with research help from engineering student Clement Imbert. With funding from the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI ), construction of a larger press designed by Ron Dennis began at the UWI Engineering Department in 1974. Upon his graduation from UWI, Clement Imbert joined the CARIRI project team which included Richard McDavid as the Project Manager. The press was completed in 1975 and, after testing, was put into operation with the help of Caroni Limited who made their machine shop available for the project. Pans were pressed from 1975 to 1976 and were tuned by Bertie Marshall and Anthony Williams who reported their findings to the project team. The biggest problem observed by the tuners was the material distribution, i.e., the lack of a gradual reduction in thickness from the circumference to the center of the pressed surface. Improvements were made and, with the support of arranger Ray Holman, the first complete set of pans were used in the 1976 Panorama competition. Pressing ceased in mid-1977 when funding from the Government of Trinidad & Tobago was halted... Ron Emrit
CARIRI ProjectThe press did not disappear – the press was in Europe at the Saab plant; there never was a local one. This was in the early 80’s/late 70’s as well and the project was conducted at CARIRI and included Richard McDavid (on this project) as well as Keith Maynard and Clement Imbert - all of whom have been involved in this project in one way or the other. We actually have two of the pressed samples (one mysteriously turned up after missing for all those years). That project included the likes of Tony Williams and Bertie Marshall. Funding was stopped for reasons I have not been able to determine – this represents 30 years of lost opportunity... Dr, Brian Copland

Pat BishopI can’t say that gender has been a factor in my pan yard activities – which now span so long a period of time that I’ve forgotten when it all started!
I remember once singing with Esso Tripoli steelband and abandoning solo singing soon afterwards in preference for pan arranging.
In those days I worked feverishly to find out what the instrument could do and I lived with the pans of Birdsong in my house for a very long time They were very kind and they soon let me arrange for them, starting with simple hymn tunes. And so too did many, many more bands.
The Classical Festival was to become the event for which my major work was done, but I also started to drill and clean up Panorama arrangements and do critical pan commentary for Radio Trinidad.
.... I should also add that I suppose that my presence in so many panyards over the years must have rustled some masculine feathers but they have kept that a deep, dark secret from me – which is just as well since I don’t suppose that I would have taken any notice!!

Invaders & Starlift Steel Orchestra pioneer Errol "Augmented" Zephyrine is alive and well. News of his April 6th 2019, passing were greatly exaggerated.
Errol Zephyrine Errol Zephyrine or "Augmented" as he liked to be called, was an original member of the Shell Invaders from the late fifties through the sixties. He was one of the four members selected to play one of the four Double Seconds introduced for the first time by the late Dr. Ellie Mannette or "ELLIE" as we called him. It was the year of "Liberstraum", and Lord Melody's "Michael Be a Man."
The Double Seconds were entirely new to everyone at that time, but in a short period he mastered the playing of the Double Seconds and made it a platform to launch his unique arrangements which was one of the elements that gave Invaders it's very distinguished sound. He was also responsible for introducing chord structures and their names, hence the nick name "Augmented." He was very insistent that we knew every note of all the chords and also what combination of notes were to be played on each of the pans. He was truly a great teacher and one of the pioneers that was know by only a few of our generation but his innovations will always live on even when they have no idea where and when it all got started.
"AUGMENTED". Ansel Joseph
