Logo-Design Kurzbeschreibung

We need a logo design for our new laboratory research group please, based in a University.
We are a scientific research group that studies genetics and disease mechanisms in a range of diseases. One of the things that makes us distinct from other laboratories is that we study a range of species and take a comparative approach - so we work with scientists, doctors, veterinarians to collect our samples, and we also work with computational biologists and data analysts. We aim to discover relationships between different genes, different environment factors and risks of diseases like diabetes, with the aim of discovering new treatments or diagnostic tests.
We already have logos for other projects that are black / pink / bottle green / purple / light blue in colour, so we would prefer to avoid these colours.
Ideally our logo should convey our scientific approach - some DNA or cells for example, but also represent 'multi-species' - ie lots of different animal types. We especially work with samples from clinical patients who are dogs, cats, humans but in future might work with other species too. We thought perhaps something like different hand prints / pawprints might be appropriate to include but we are also happy to look at other ideas.
I also wondered about somehow the 3 letters representing 3 different species (Human, Dog, Cat) eg with shape or footprint or tail / ears.
We would like our logo to look crisp and modern. It will go on our website as well as on our slides when making presentations.
We hope that the overall impact of our work will help dogs, cats and humans to live healthier lives and would like our logo to somehow show this.
It would be lovely if our logo could make people smile too.
