Are there any preferences when it comes to logo being text or image?

Not really. My gut feeling is that I would tend to like text better, but this might be only because my general idea of logos associated to law firms is that of scales etc, which don't appeal to me as being modern and elegant. However, if you can convince me otherwise, an image could be an option.
