Cover design for my contemporary novel "Teaching Tori"
The title of the book works on two levels - Tori as a teacher, and someone (Tom) teaching her that she needs to overcome hurtful experiences in the past in order to be able to trust and love again (see synopsis below)
Requirements:
Book Title: Teaching Tori
Author name: Annie Rehmann
Font: Clean, strong fonts - nothing frilly or cursive
Target audience: Women 25+
Book cover:
Should be eye-catching and convey strong emotion
Close up shot or portrait of Tori: 30 year old, slim/small build, green eyes, curly dark hair (past shoulders). Wearing a dark greenstone/pounamu pendant (rau kumara twist) on a dark waxed cord sitting just below her collarbone. She could be wearing a snug-ftting green long-sleeved top, but not a necessity.
Her look should be a mixture of being wary and challenging as if she asked "So what it is that you are trying to teach me?” or “I’m trying really hard to grasp what you are teaching me, but I can’t/won’t follow”.
Her look should reflect the ambivalent feelings that she is going through – she really wants to believe that Tom is a good guy whom she can trust, but experiences in her past have made her very distrustful.
Alternatively, her look could be more relaxed. Not a full-blown smile, but a more upbeat emotion.
Whether she is smiling or not is not the most important part. Crucial is that strong emotions should be conveyed through her look.
In the background I would like to see the landscape of Central Otago/NZ - see attached pictures and shutterstock pictures 39575917 & 36452788 as reference.
I have also attached a picture of the above mentioned greenstone pendant.
Cover design should be for both Amazon and other ebook formats.
For Amazon, cover art has an ideal height/width ratio of 1.6, this means:
• A minimum of 625 pixels on the shortest side and 1000 pixels on the longest side
• For best quality, image would be 1563 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side
Must include all files for printed book cover and ebook cover
Synopsis
Tori has put up with Gerard’s bullying for so long, she is surprised when Tom, a visiting adviser to her school, turns into an ally she doesn’t really want. Fiercely independent and wary of people (except for children, of course), she is perfectly capable of dealing with Gerard by herself.
Despite her efforts to keep Tom at an arm’s length, he manages to gain her trust, and a tender relationship starts to form. A future with Tom looks certain until a misunderstanding leads Tori to pull away from him. When she recognises her mistake, it is too late to win him back.
The breakup affects her greatly, down to the one constant she could always fall back on in times of crisis: her love of teaching. Tori fails to meet her own high expectations of an inspiring teacher which leads her onto a downward spiral of feelings of inadequacy and guilt.
After weeks of misery, Tori takes to the hills of Central Otago to clear her head. High up in the tussock country she loves so much, she realises that it is time to move on and let go of the past.
The decision comes as a relief, but a sudden weather change gives Tori little time to dwell on it.
Will Tori make it home safely to put her decisions into action? And will Tom ever find out what happened to her?
