-Need a free-standing logo as well as a logo with the domain name. (including and excluding ".it")
A little about the service provided by "discourse.it":
It creates a collaborative learning environment for students and instructors. Students and instructors can interact with each other in real-time.
My view of the service:
I view the service as a machine consisting of many more machines, each working to make the system work. Please see the uploaded image, which conveys that message. Unfortunately, the image seems too complex, any simplistic representation could be considered.

Guys, it doesn't really have to be a tree with cogs, it was just an idea. Other designs with similar themes would be ok too!
