what would the icons below look like?

The icons are a shorthand way to conjure up the concept of the 'avatar' images... If at the top you had three people wearing different types of hats, for instance (wizard's hat, Napoleon's hat & workers' hard hat), those might act as icons. Alternatively you could put tools in their hands (such as a telescope, a ruler and a hammer) - the telescope, ruler, and hammer would then be the icons.
