Logo-Design Kurzbeschreibung
** About us:
SwedesInAustralia.com will be a community site for Swedish expats and tourists in Australia, featuring discussion forums, event calendars, newsletters, articles and travel guides for Swedes visiting, moving to or living in Australia. We also plan to publish our own line of informational booklets to aid Swedish migrants and tourists to Australia.
** We are looking for:
1. A text and image logo where the image / symbol component is identifiable on its own.
2. An image / symbol only version of the same logo, with the url/name SwedesInAustralia.com omitted.
** Usage:
Primary use:
- On a website on white and sometimes blue backgrounds.
- In print on white background.
Secondary use:
- A down scaled version of the logo’s image element will be used on a Facebook community page (and be used as small site logo that will show up when Facebook visitors “like” items on the SwedesInAustralia.com web site).
** Desired Outputs:
1. Vector file for rendering web site and print logos in different resolutions.
2. Separate vector graphic file with just the logo’s image element, so that we can render small logos to be used on e.g. a Facebook community / group page and for use in constrained spaces.
3. Transparent .png files with white matte of the above (in a high enough resolution for print).
Updates
Hi everyone.
Thanks for all your submissions so far. Here is some general feedback to help you win the prize.
1. I care much much more about the graphical symbol in the logo than I do about the text component. If the logo does not have a clever and creative graphical element, you will not win.
2. To create a good symbol / icon I suggest you identify two or more elements that are familiarly Swedish or familiarly Australian (but not too familiar!) If you then combine them in a creative and hopefully unexpected way, you are on your way to a good design that I will like.
3. Please note "not too familiar" and "unexpected" in the above bullet. What do I mean by that? Two elements that are too familiar is the Swedish flag and the outline of the Australian continent. Pretty boring. Combining them in an unexpected way is to paste the Swedish flag into the outline of Australia. Not a winning design. Actually, this specific combination is one that I even asked designers to not submit in the brief. Despite this, two of the submitted designs if that exact pattern that I wanted to avoid.
4. As for colors, consider how the design degrades should I print it on a black and white laser printer. Yellow text or contours on white background? Not a good idea.
5. Avoid using color only to convey significant information. Taking a generic shape and just coloring it with the Swedish and Australian flag colors is not a winning design. Can you do a grey-scale version of the symbol and still communicate "Swedes + Australians = Yay!"? If not, you might want to reconsider the design.
6. Color is nice, but the standard palette in MS Paint is not. Please avoid simple gradients and the saturated color tones listed in default color palettes. If you need inspiration for cool color schemes, check out sites like kuler.adobe.com or colorcombos.com. Again, think about how your design degrades if printed in grey scale.
Cool! Have a great weekend! Good luck!

Hi again. I gave one of the designers some feedback and figure I should include parts of it here for all to see.
Some ideas for graphical elements in case you want to play with this a bit more, but can not think of things to represent Sweden / Australia…
Australian things:
The 7-headed federation star from the Australian flag,
Australian plants like the waratah, the wattle or the frangipani. Gum trees (eucalyptus)
Animals: like the kangaroo, the emu, crocodile or koala.
Sports: Cricket and rugby
Other things_ beer and barbecue, "utes" (=a special kind of pick-up truck), the opera house, Ayer's rock / Uluru, summer heat and beaches,
Ideas for things to represent Sweden:
The three crowns insignia (look on Wikipedia for "Three Crowns"), spruce tree(s), snow crystals, ice and cold, viking helmets and ships. moose and raindeer, a red cottage, tourists with sandals in their socks. :)
Have a nice weekend!

Everyone,
I just want to say a big thanks to everyone for participating in the contest - I have received some really cool designs and it's a shame that I could only pick one winner. It was a really close call in the end, and I wish you all the very best in future competitions.
Cheers!

**Target Market:
Swedish expats and visitors to Australia. Australians with an interest in the Swedish-Australian community.
** Our logo should ideally communicate:
1. For Swedes on their way to Australia or already living there, we want to say that we are a friendly, trustworthy, and welcoming community where one can find reliable and helpful information and advice, as well as new friends in their new home country.
2. For Australians interested in the Swedish community, we want to celebrate the close friendship between the two nations and communicate the Swedes’ appreciation for Australia’s welcoming generosity and friendship. The Swedish migrant community (just like Australians in Sweden) is a well-integrated and polite bunch of people who are delighted to call both Australia and Sweden home. The relationship between Swedes and Australians is a close friendship between equals.

Anforderungen
Muss haben
- An image / symbol / graphical element that can be used on its own as an icon in e.g. site listings or where space is limited so that the full name of the site does not fit.
Schön zu haben
- No strong preferences for what colors to include.
The overall color scheme of the site and print products will be shades of black-grey-white and blue, maybe with accents in some other color. The logo will primarily be used on a white background.
The flag colors of Sweden are yellow and blue. The flag colors of Australia are red, white and blue. If you choose to do something with the flag colors, do not feel locked in by the exact hues of the flags, for instance other shades of yellow and blue to represent Sweden would be fine.
Sollte nicht haben
- Please avoid the following design ideas (they are used in logos for other Swedish groups in Australia):
1) The yellow / blue cross of the Swedish flag pasted into an outline of the Australian continent.
2) As above, but pasted into an outline of the 7-armed Federation star from the Australian flag.
