I'm a writer/producer attending the American Film Market (AFM) in LA next month & I need a "one sheet" for the projects on my slate, starting with an action/thriller, State's Evidence - which is also being developed as a graphic novel.
The logline is: After being forced to infiltrate a white supremacist terror cell by a renegade cop, an ex-convict tries to save the son he never knew from the extremists’ malign influence.
The full synopsis is attached as a Word file.
The story is set mostly in the arid desert of Southern California near the border with Mexico. Its themes involve choosing between keeping your head down vs. protecting family/loved ones; about being caught between law enforcement and outlaws (in the form of a white supremacist gang); about identity, race, loyalty & illegal immigration.
Because it hasn't been made there are no images from the film. I've uploaded an earlier version of the cover page of the graphic novel (not the final one), as well as a couple of sketches which are works in progress for a new cover. These are NOT images to actually use in the final design, but rather illustrations of the characters and ideas/themes/locations/imagery contained in the script. (Such as the swastika.)
The final "poster" will be A4 or letter-sized and double-sided.
The front should be similar to a movie poster. It should contain the text:
"Shoot First Productions presents
STATE'S EVIDENCE
An action/thriller feature film and graphic novel"
Along with the tag line: "Caught between the law and the lawless..."
The back should have the logline, synopsis and contact details. (See Word files attached). The company's logo is also attached as a file and should be included in the corner on the back.
I was going to mention (or attach) some examples of movie posters I like in this genre, but I decided I'd rather let designers come at it without those preconceptions. Also, clearly I don't have the advantage of any shots of the stars of the film or any stills from the film (as it hasn't been made), and I figured that will most likely influence the type of design choices that can be made.
A few final thoughts that might help inspiration: Given the desert location, I wondered about the use of red/orange/yellow (perhaps with bold black text?). Also, there's a climactic scene that takes place in Salton Sea in CA (see attached image or Google it). I will be pitching this to producers, distributors and sales agents, but the ultimate target audience for the film would skew male and likely be predominantly 16-39.
