UPDATE 3/4/11: Feel free to only submit a logo initially if that's easier. We can do the letterhead, cards, etc. once we nail the logo. Thanks
UPDATE 3/3/11: I just want to emphasize that we are open to all ideas, the comments below are just to help your creative process. Do not feel compelled to use blue or the old well! In fact, I would like to be surprised by an idea we have not considered, good luck!
ORIGINAL POST:
We are a small but growing law firm in Chapel Hill, NC. The firm started with just me but has now grown to three attorneys, plus supporting staff. We anticipate adding three additional attorneys over the next 12 months.
My primary practice area is real estate and we do a lot of residential closings for people buying homes, I also do business and immigration law. Mike focuses on traffic/criminal matters and personal injury. Paul focuses on divorce and family matters. We all do some litigation. Our next addition will be an estate planning lawyer, and then likely a full time business/corporate attorney.
I give you this information as background, because as you can see we are transitioning from solo practitioner/small firm to full service firm. I want to start slowly shifting our brand and I think this logo/stationery/business card project will be the beginning of that.
We have done well cultivating our current brand of "Your Hometown Firm for Personal Legal Service" and a kind of general message that "We're the best positioned "local" guys to get results in Chapel Hill." We have also played heavily on the fact that our office is an historic renovated home located in the "The Heart of Franklin Street's Realtor Row"- which appeals to realtors (our bread and butter), plays well with clients who are buying their own homes with us, and gives an aura that we've been part of the community for a long, long time. We use photos of the house and currently use a graphic of the house on our business cards. One final background note, Chapel Hill is the home of the University of North Carolina, all of our attorneys are graduates from UNC, and in addition to www.MaitlandLaw.com we also own www.ChapelHillLaw.com and www.TarheelLawyers.com which we sometimes use in advertising to catch attention under our banner of "Maitland Law" or "Maitland Law Firm". Basically we like to encourage people to think of us as those "UNC guys" and we have always featured photos of the university, especially its signature Old Well, on our website.
The problem is that as the Firm grows, our cool little house thing (which works so well for real estate and that "Your home for personal legal service" feeling) is beginning to work against some of our more "power" practice areas (like litigation and divorce law). We are reaching beyond Chapel Hill to serve Raleigh, Durham, RTP, and the entire Triangle Area. Plus it is likely that we will eventually need to relocate to a new office (or at least open an additional office), so I want to start de-emphasizing the "house" and pushing the "firm."
We recently upgraded our website which is hosted by a legal services company (Westlaw), so we have a "custom" template product. For what it lacks in originality, I am still pleased with the general feel of the site and the way it is projecting a "larger" presence for us while still holding onto our "local" roots. With only three attorneys we're not yet truly beyond "local", but with six attorneys will be one of the three largest firms in our marketplace. I encourage you to visit the site www.MaitlandLaw.com to see our current marketing.
I hope all of this information is helpful to you to understand certain subtleties about us that I hope will make your design work easier and more effective. The "logo" on our website is the inspiration for this project. It kind of developed as just part of our upgraded website and while it is pretty nice (the faded "MLF" replaced a graphic of our house) it is the result of a few minutes of work rather than the full attention it deserves.
SO.... We need you to design a logo... which means we will need to redo our letterhead... which means we will need to redo our business cards... which means basically I am asking you to update our whole image. We think we are looking for a clean modern look (not too far from traditional) but we are open to your ideas. I must confess that I am biased to the idea of incorporating graphics that imply the Old Well into the logo but, again, we are open to your ideas. Please note that the Old Well is trademarked by the University, so we need to be careful with that. Another motivating factor for this project is that we just acquired a new color copier, so we'd like to take advantage of color on our letterhead. We currently use ivory bond paper for our letterhead and envelopes, but are open to using white, grey or some other color for the paper.
For obvious reasons, we are extremely partial to Carolina blue (sky blue) for our primary color scheme but we are not handcuffed to it. Having said that, a cool non-color black/grey/white logo and color scheme would be acceptable.
Thanks in advance for your help in growing our Firm. Please don't hesitate to contact me for further information or details,
Rob Maitland
