Logo-Design Kurzbeschreibung
University/college level students are particularly known to struggle with the ability to select appropriate statistical tests or procedures for different types of data, research questions and hypotheses. StatHand is new iOS and web application that assists students and professionals with selecting an appropriate statistical test, based on their input into the application. The name 'StatHand' is a combination of the words 'Statistics' and 'Hand'. The 'Stat' portion of the name hints the scope and the area of the application, 'Statistics'. The 'Hand' portion of the name, signifies a hierarchy, where each 'finger' on the 'Hand' hints a branch of the hierarchy. As a metaphor, the 'Hand' also suggests that the application is 'handy' (i.e., useful), is always 'on hand' (i.e., available wherever the user is), and that it can provide a 'helping hand' (i.e., assistance) when making difficult decisions.
The application begins with asking a user, 'What do you want to do?' and based on their answer, the application either presents a different question to gather more information on the task the user is trying to accomplish or present them with a statistical test that best matches their input into the application.
The logo should depict the name of the application, so that if a user looks at the logo, they can instantly see where the name 'StatHand' comes from. It should be provided in forms that both include and do not include the name 'StatHand'. In the form where the name of the application is not present in the logo, the user should be able to clearly link the logo with 'StatHand'.
The logo will be used in the following circumstances: icon to launch the iOS application; splash screen for iOS application; header of web application; home page of website and various promotional materials (e.g., posters, flyers, email headers/footers etc.). Due to these varying uses, the two elements (logo and name), will need to be designed such that they can be presented independently of each other (i.e., just the logo, or just the name), in portrait format (with the logo either below or above the name) and in landscape format (with the logo either to the left or right of the name). The designers may also consider whether the name and logo can be overlayed or integrated for some uses. Finally, the designers may want to consider whether it is necessary to have a 'simple' version for use in small spaces (e.g., iOS application icon), as well as a more elaborate version for use in larger spaces (e.g., splash screens).
Design elements that the designers may want to consider incorporating into the logo include: a hand, with the fingers indicating 'branches' that the user may follow; a tree, symbolising the same sort of metaphor (branches a user can follow); and letters from the Greek alphabet, which are used as statistical abbreviations (e.g., alpha, beta, tau, kappa, eta, phi, chi etc.). However, the designers are not constrained to using these elements - they are merely suggestions. It is important the icon looks modern, engaging and unique.
