A Sporting Chance Book Cover Design

Hello
i only have one question, what style do you have in mind (drawn, cartoony, photo)?
is there any book cover that you like from which i could get some inspiration?
Hi Mendez, not sure to be honest. Pls don't take my idea as gospel, I'm one of the worst creative minds there is. I think the key to this cover is it needs to be inspirational. Now that can be in many different forms. In terms of book covers, I like Seth Godins use of colour to stand out. I think that Simon Sineks Start with Why is an example of a powerful cover just using words. Tim Ferris's 4 hour work week speaks well to what that book is about. Maybe scroll quickly through Amazon in the business and self help sections and look at which covers jump out. Keep in mind, this and kindle will be the covers primary position. Hope this helps?
Hello, thanks!
I’m so glad you said two things: 1. the use of color to stand out, 2. the use of words (the title as the main design). I believe to attract attention "less is more" I think if I make an illustration with a lot of detail then the book will loose punch, we need to make the best of that one second ppl use to look around.
I went to the library to look at book covers for store displays and windows, and I got a pretty good idea of what "girls would like" but not sports stores owners. So I will play with a sports teams colors and the title and send a couple things for you to give me some feedback.
I’ll also look into the amazon thing.
:)
What is the size of the cover to be? If you are going to print it eventually, now is the time to get the size right. I design a lot of books and covers for BearManor Media so know what a cover needs to be. Is it possible to see the one you hated so I can steer away from that direction? If not, that's fine. I also agree with the other comments made that showing so much detail would "clutter" the cover. So just let me know the size and I'll do this today! You can see my other work at www.adkinsconsult.com
Hey Robbie, to be frank, I don't know. This is my first ever manuscript. I'm looking to go Amazon/kindle first, then to print. There will be some framework illustrations and possibly some pictures, but not many. Not sure if that helps. Being a prolific designer in this field, I'd be ok with what ever you suggest. Excited to see what you come up with, I've really struggled to find a designer who can grasp this. I'm currently on leave so am unable to attach a copy of the poor designs so far. Suffice to say, many of your designs on your port folio webpage are substantially better. Looking forward to a good result, and possibly and ongoing relationship. Kristian
OK. Most of the books I design are 6"x9" (not sure how that converts to metrics) and it is a common size on Amazon CreateSpace. To post your book as a Kindle book, you just need to submit it to them as a MS Word doc with the illustrations inline. If you already have it in word, it is easy. Just use a style sheet for headlines and subheads and such. I'll send a cover idea or two to you soon. BTW, what sports? I was thinking footballs (like American) but you probably don't sell those in Australia! So soccer balls, etc? I'll do a little research.
I love NFL, so a blend of Aussie and International sports would be best.
I just submitted a design. The resolution is smaller than you need, but there are restrictions about what size I can submit. If you pick this, I can send final file. I used more sports popular colors. Don't know about soccer ball colors...hope this one is OK! If not, I'll replace with black and white one.
I like that there's commercial and sporting elements. It's just really busy, hard to know what to look at? Again, I keep coming back to how this would look on a shelf in a book store, and it'd melt into the crowd, not stand out. How can we simplify these elements into either a logo, or some images that deliver the same message?
We could remove the couple with the golf clubs.
