Logo for company and software

We are working to develop mapping technology for the internet. These maps aim to warn the users before they stumble into the virtual lions/dragons den.

I think the logo needs to reflect a new piece of equipment to help you safely navigate the virtual world. Much like a map, sexton, compass or gps in the physical world.

We are looking to a logo that can be scaled to be displayed in browser status bars and be recognizable. Would also like to have a logo that can have a color mask applied to (eg. black, orange, red) to indicate danger levels and look good.
