Our Nairobi: A Westgate Memorial

Since the attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi on September 21st, 2013 Nairobi citizens have lived in a state of mourning, fear and shock. We believe that a healthy society, in a nation whose unofficial motto is Peace, Love and Unity needs to remember these words now more than ever. Whilst other attacks, emergencies and national dilemmas seem likely in the next few years, we the Kenyan citizenry, cannot let a four- day siege in our nation’s capital city, pass without a meaningful national conversation.
The “Our Nairobi: A Westgate Memorial” project aims to address this. It is not an investigation. It is a powerful memorial that draws its inspiration from a similar effort undertaken by Time Magazine and the citizens of New York after the September 11 attack: http://content.time.com/time/beyond911/
Part of the memorial consists of interviews with those personally affected by the attack. They were all asked one question: “What were you doing the morning of the attack?”
